South Bend Strong: 60 Years Later

On December 20, 1963, the Studebaker Corporation ended 111 years of vehicle production in South Bend. For generations, Studebaker was a South Bend fixture and a way of life for thousands of families. Its closing resonated throughout the community as 7,000 workers faced an uncertain future.

This small-scale exhibit will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the South Bend plant closing by looking at the closure’s impact on the community and how South Bend has survived—and thrived—in the following decades, with new businesses and enterprises that are helping grow the enrich the community in the 21st century, including Ignition Park and the Renaissance District.
